It seems like just yesterday Jarah was saying that this project was never going to see the light of day on her site FresnoFamous. The project, if I can recall, was two years in at that time. Fast forward another 3 years and there really hasn’t been any progress.

But finally we may have a progressive step in the South Stadium Saga! We wasted millions of dollars on the last environmental report (back when the project included a concrete river, equipped with gondola rides through Falles Paredes) and we are back for some more.

This was posted 9.19 on the RDA”s web site.

http://www.fresnorda.com/ssp/ssp_news.php#24

RDA, City of Fresno, and Forest City are currently preparing the Environmental Impact Report, which is a critical milestone for the project’s planning. The planning team is working with several
organizations including Cal Trans and the Fresno COG to assess the project’s impact on the area including economic, aesthetic, and traffic. A public draft is expected in the Fall of 2008.

By the time this project is completed I am sure we will witness Reza put up 3 more downtown projects, further exemplifying why private downtown investment works so much better.

S. Bryan Medina’s spoken word performances are engaging portrayals of the harsh realities of life, disfigured value systems, satisfying nostalgia, longed-for serenity, and a range of other themes and characters that only he could mesh together and produce from one mind.

S. Bryan Medina

The choice words themselves are captivating, but more memorable experiences come from the vivid physical animation and expressions present in Bryan’s live presentations.  Bryan Medina is the type of artist that chooses not only to speak his mind, but also deliver those thoughts to his audience personally.  Bryan conveys his message through emphatic shouts, selective melodramatic sequences, and the relative imagery that people crave.

One of Bryan’s more impressionable attributes is manifested through extemporaneous freestyle segments.  He is known to include these improvised moments in his shows and seems to use them as a chance to break free of the structure he created in his memorized work.  The audience moves from anticipation to deferential acceptance as Bryan dances across stage, eyes closed; with varying voice inflections adjusting his words to available musical accompaniment.  These segments have been met by mixed reviews, but are entertaining and can be a welcomed reprieve, within a lackluster lineup of poets.

Overall, S. Bryan Medina is a relevant artist with an uncompromising talent worth witnessing.  His observable experience and creativity lend themselves to an occasionally egoistic guise, but more often a fun and eventful illustration of the workings of his mind.  One thing to remember, the show does not begin when Bryan speaks; it begins immediately upon his presence.

Fresno Fusion was on tap at the Starline last Saturday to begin a trial recording of the Reality Series set to launch very very soon which will follow The Super Lucky Catz as they prepare for shows, the ups-and-downs of the central valley music scene, and as they get ready to go on tour.

We showed up at 10:00, and to our surprise the show hadn’t begun yet. Chuck was on stage entertaining the crowd while the sound man tried, at times without any real progress, to get the sound problem resolved. Chuck chanted, “It does not sound good in the microphone/No it does not sound good in the microphone” while the anxious crowd waited with a growing sense of urgency growin within the artists and the sound man.

Finally Chuck and his DJ K.P. gave each other mutual nods indicating that the sound wasn’t anywhere near perfect but they were going to proceed with the set regardless. Chuck worked hard to revitalize the pulse of the mainly comatose crowd. His stocatto flow and razor-sharp delivery cut through the Starline air with or without ideal sound set-up conditions. A small group of fans crowded the front of the stage while Chuck performed “I’m Every MC” and “Milk Money.” Chuck performed his songs with an evident extra sense of aggression in his voice as his music steadily got the crowd into the mood of the night.

The extent of the sound problem was beyond anything that either musician had experienced before. K.P. told me that he had never had such a bad experience at the Starline or any other venue.

The crowd was beginning to liven up as Chuck finished his set and turned the Mic over to Rob Tha Voice, lead singer of the Super Lucky Catz. The sound issues exponentially grew as the Super Lucky Catz’ set included the use of multiple microphones, which at times didn’t work concurrently.

Again the artists performed with less than perfect sound conditions, and Rob brought it home with his supernatural vocals. Rob’s stage presence, while dressed in his usual indoor sunglasses and black hat, is something that all Fresnan’s need to see at some point. The tracks they played varied in the mood they set within the venue. The Super Lucky Catz have quite a few different sounds that reflect multiple genres.

The night had ups and downs. The low moments could not be attributed to the performers who pleased their fans as usual.

As you may already know, Planet Asia is a solid emcee.  He’s been a well respected lyricist for quite some time but he proved his position, yet again, at a show this past Tuesday at the Starline.

pa_diff-show1.jpg

September 23, 2008, Planet Asia brought his show back to his hometown of Fresno, CA and brought DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill along with him.  The event was put on by Sugarhill and was part of a promotional tour for PA and Muggs’ new project, titled “Pain Language”.  The album dropped September 16th and is still fresh to the listeners, but some people in attendance seemed to already know the words to the new songs.

DJ Muggs vs. Planet Asia Starline Promo

I was worried I’d miss a bit of the show by showing up around 10pm (doors opened at 9), but there was still plenty of time to mix and mingle with the crowd as the local DJ’s were still playing sets and Planet Asia had yet to hit the stage.  During that time there was a real hip-hop vibe in the building because the DJs played a lot of classic cuts and there was a good number of prominent Fresno hip-hop and rap artists in attendance.

A few artists in the crowd: Fashawn, Hecktik, Diego Redd, Tre 80, Dengee, and Phlex Ruger.

Another great addition to the vibe of the event was a genuine cypher session. Close to the stage and speakers, a few rappers in the crowd (not the ones named) began trading bars in one of hip-hops oldest past times.  The scene was set.

Around eleven, the headliners entered the building, and prepared to hit the stage.  Planet Asia’s fellow lyricist and right hand man, Turbin grabbed the mic and began to pump up the crowd, building excitement for PA and DJ Muggs upcoming performance.

Planet Asia then took the stage and rocked the crowd like only he can.  His fierce delivery and fiery lyrics came through clear over tracks mixed by DJ Muggs.  One of my favorite renditions of the night was the live performance of “Sleeper Cell”, off of the “Pain Language” joint album.  While it isn’t one of PA’s more lyrically profound songs, he repped his Fresno roots and the way he spit that night made it golden.  PA has a truly distinguishing stage presence, real lyrical astuteness, and an in-your-face type of flow that’s been missing from mainstream rap for quite some time.  Muggs’ and PA both shined on “That’s What It Is”.

The entire show was on point, even when PA broke into a freestyle right on stage.  Muggs threw up a beat and Asia began rapping about everything in the room from the notables in attendance, to what was written on somebody in the crowd’s shirt.  All of this was done in good timing and with an overflow of energy that wouldn’t let the crowd calm down.

After Planet Asia finished, DJ Muggs did his thang on stage for a while.  Muggs played a variety of music, from rock, to rap, hip-hop, to reggae and it all went together well.  It’s hard to make that work, but by playing the right artists within a quality on-the-fly mix, DJ Muggs proved that he knows what he’s doing.

All in all, the show was well worth attending and had a nostalgia about it that is hard to find.  The new album, from what I’ve heard, seems to be worth the purchase price and I recommend staying up-to-date on Planet Asia because he’s still on the rise -keeping a real hip-hop vibe alive and fresh in his community and around the world.

Saturday, September 20, 2008 was definitely a memorable night.  I was able to attend the farewell celebration of KFCF 88.1 fm’s Move On UP radio program and I also had the pleasure of hanging with funk/soul musician Nino Moschella!  I met some members of The Park, hung out with lots of other cool people, and I heard some really good music… all at Audie’s Olympic/Club Fred in the Tower District.

MOU5YearFlyer

Devoya Mayo (5-year original host/creator, Move On UP) is one cool lady, with a sense for what’s important, what’s hot, and a passion for positive creativity that is often unmatched.  People tend to seek her out when in the planning stages of events because she’s proven to have the know-how to make things jump off right (in the best/hippest way possible).  It was saddening to hear that she would no longer be doing the Move On UP radio show, but these things happen and it then becomes time to… well… move on

So, Ms. Soulflower (Devoya) threw one hell of a party at Audie’s Olympic and a whole lot of people stayed UP to get down …all night long! A few choice DJ’s spun good music the whole way through, but the highlight of the evening was definitely Nino Moschella performing alongside The Park.

This talented team put together a very fun, soulful, and funky set of analog grooves that pulled nearly everybody to the dance floor at least a few times by midnight.  The club was packed and for good reason.

Nino played a number of tunes from his original catalogue and even threw in some new stuff off of his upcoming album.  Let me tell you, it sounded great!  Nino mentioned in conversation that his recordings are almost finished and should be shipping off to be mastered soon.  So, be on the lookout for a dope release from Nino on Ubiquity Records in the near future!  I know I will.

The only noticeable downside to the festivities came after Nino and The Park left the stage.  The next DJ played a set of Oldschool grooves that was good, but seemed to go on a bit too long.  I think he should have done a more modern mix with some Oldschool jams sprinkled throughout because an all oldies mix only lasts so long with a predominantly Newschool crowd, no matter how musically erudite they seem to be.  The majority of the partygoers seemed reluctant, but compelled to mellow out.  Also, there was a lot of intermittent feedback from the speakers that nobody could figure out how to fix.  That turned out to be a pretty big distraction at times.

Other than that little bit of calamity, the night was a huge success and a very entertaining experience.  I recommend that everybody check out Nino Moschella & The Park.  Also, check out Devoya’s last show on 88.1’s Move On UP this coming Friday, September 26 @ 7pm, where she’ll be interviewing local musician Glen Delpit.  You won’t be disappointed.

Props to miss Devoya Mayo for a great program and a wonderful celebration.  I look forward to following her undoubted progress throughout upcoming years.

It’s easy to want the fastest or the best.  Sometimes the fastest and the best are the same thing, often times they are not.

This city we live in is in a bit of a moving stagnancy.  It has this unwillingness to move forward, and when it does it likes to have it fast and convenient.  Redoing what has been done in other places with big names and flashy presentations.  After all, marketing has it’s place and does it’s job.  Catch your eye and reel you in.  It works, it’s proven.  In fact, our own city has proven it time and again as box after box opens and and people line up to enter the machine, leave their money and get spit back out as if they were never there.  That’s Awesome, Fantastic, Excellent Choice, Have a Great Day!

Where did your money go at that big store?  It went to any number of corporate locations far away in tall buildings with mirror finishes and fountains and names on placards on doors with the full gambit of acronyms, Assistant Vice CEO of Regional Distribution and Logistics, Western Division.  As much as 70%, and more often times, go to out of state locations with your corporate purchase.  There is no knocking these people, they studied hard in school, scratched and clawed and made the right moves.  They make the right decisions and spend the money in the right places to make themselves back that money and then some.  Kudos to them, they set examples and standards, a small business uses them as reference time and again for how to go about doing business.  Can’t recall the last time I met a CEO or Vice President, though.  Can’t say I know where their products are made or manufactured or how the people who work for them are treated.  I appreciate their consistency, thoroughness and efficiency.  Examples of the human machine that knows no bounds, the mind.

A school less attended, a curriculum less taught and a life less ordinary.  Do the things no one does, reach for unreachable goals.  Go to places for the sake of a different experience and breaking out of the mold.  Trying sushi cause you never tried it before, countries of millions live on it so it probably won’t kill you.  Trying the sea cucumber or jellyfish at Hunan cause,,,,,what the heck does that taste like?  Trying to eat the Megazone at Milano cause they make it with love and are trying to give you more than you could ever ask for.  Trying the Lamb Shank at Diana’s cause you never tried Lamb Shank before.  A world of flavor is out there to try, and many times it cannot be found anywhere else but in this city you live in, it’s as unique as you are and it’s here waiting for you to try.

Yep, another coffee house, that’s what Café Corazón is…..not.  Like no other, well, perhaps a few like us, but no where in this valley and you’re hard pressed to find an equal even where there are supposed to be great coffee houses.  This isn’t a business run by non existent corporate owners or people with no passion for what they are doing.  No chasing the dollar or cold hearted hard sells.  The business exists to provide the highest degree/quality coffee experience we are capable of, to give this city pride, to give the coffee plantations and harvesters pride and for us to be able to provide a service we can be proud of.

When I roast the coffee I know where it comes from, what plantation and what part of the world.  I know what to expect for flavor and what degree of roast best brings out the flavor in espresso or as a brewed cup.  As the coffee roaster, I control the flavor of the bean.  At the espresso machine, we control the flavor of the espresso.  We also know you can make an espresso out of any coffee and offer you the choice.  When I see a quirky bean come out of the roaster my minds eye begins a journey.  Where did this bean come from?  At some point it was on a ship, on a truck before that, at a plantation before that and before that it was being harvested, by hands of hard working people.  Much like grape tray rolling here in the valley, there is no machine that does the work for humans, it must be done by hand.  I appreciate that hand and the hard work, I want to do them proud, make sure they are paid well with fair trade prices on their beans and I want to know that when we serve an espresso, it’s the very best that is being served.  No, we are like no other Espresso Bar in town.  This is why I roast the coffee, this is why I set standards, this is why every cup is served with passion, appreciation and pride.

A greater percentage of money spent at a locally owned business stays local, as much as 70% of what is spent at a locally owned business stays in the local economy.  Many times a local business has to do more in order to get regular patronage, pay more because premiums are higher, and expect more from their employees because a small business cannot offer benefits and retirement plans.  So small businesses have to raise the bar and offer what no other place can, the very best and hope that the city they serve loves it.  We are not fast fast fast, get you in and get you out right now.  Pulling espresso shots of love cannot be rushed.  You can meet the owner when I’m around or talk to Liz who runs it with me.  We care about our city and want to help bring it positive change by participating in it’s growth.  I do not take shortcuts on any aspect because I feel that hard work should always pay off and people will always notice hard work.  This is a business of pride, joy and love.  We hope that the money we spend on fair trade coffee helps those in other countries with their daily struggles in life, even if it means a new pair of shoes or a blanket to stay warm with in the winters.  We open our doors to the local music scene to give them a place to express themselves, same with artists for Arthop.  We love this city, our hard work shows it.

Eat locally, think globally.

Who do you give your money to

Last Saturday was my first time entering the new night life venue and restaurant in Fresno called Cabo Wabo. I had already heard some great things about it from friends, but it is really something that you need to see and experience for yourself.

We arrived around 10:00 pm and Cabo Wabo was already drawing a huge line. The whole Granite Park area looks like something that was taken from a big city amusement park and dropped right here on Cedar and Ashlan. Cabo Wabo had a breathtaking size and appearance, with the venue name radiating in bright yellow and massively displayed in the entrance.
I took a shot and told the security that I was the owner of a web site called FresnoFusion.com, and that I was here to do a write-up on the venue and was hoping to have the wait expedited. The first security gaurd gave me a bit of a hard time, but he retrieved one of the managers who quickly let us in.

Upon entering the venue one is easily overcome with excitement as the interior decor and amazing sound system and stage come into view. The crowd, mostly young and seemingly well educated, seemed to be having a great time and the dance floor in front of the stage was consistently occupied with dancers.

My party was sitting behind the stage, where a group called Cabo Uno was performing quite impressively I might add. A short staircase leads you up to our area, which was nicely elevated and gated so that guests can overlook the crowd and performers. Cabo Uno played some great songs from Journey to Guns n’ Roses. The DJ played some hip-hop for a bit which seemed to be welcomed by those on the dance floor, but the music choices for the night were mostly rock.

The sound in here was absolutely incredible! There were huge speakers in the corner above our table, and often the sound was so loud that our chairs would vibrate a bit. Cabo Wabo might instantly be the best sound and stage music venue for bands to perform at.

The only thing that was a bit disappointing, and this is just a minor comment, was that the bartenders were not making the best  mixed drinks. A friend who’s birthday we were celebrating had to have a Long Island Iced Tea made twiced, and they still couldn’t get it right. This is just a minor deterrent from the overall enjoyment of the night.

Overall I would say that Cabo Wabo has set a new standard for night life venues in Fresno. The night was fun and full of visual and auditory candy, and I would recommend all Fresnan’s and out-of-towners to visit when the chance arises.

Give us your feedback and input if you have been to Cabo Wabo……
